How to Access Advanced Boot Options (WinRE) in Windows 11 and 10

The Advanced Boot Options screen lets you start Windows in advanced troubleshooting modes. Provide various recovery options that's useful in attempting repair and recovery of damaged or incorrectly configured Windows PCs.

The Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is also referred to as Advanced Startup Options, Advanced boot options, or Windows Start settings, is a built-in Windows recovery environment that allows you to diagnose and repair problems with your system when it can’t boot normally. It provides access to tools like Startup Repair, System Restore, Command Prompt, and other diagnostic tools. When your Windows 11 or 10 system encounters issues like startup failures, system crashes, or the need for advanced troubleshooting, the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) helps you diagnose and fix issues using tools like Safe Mode, System Restore, Startup Repair, and more. Whether you’re dealing with startup problems, driver issues, or simply want to tweak advanced settings, here is how to access Advanced Boot Options (WinRE) in Windows 11 and 10.

What Is Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)?

The Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is a built-in recovery platform in Windows 11 and 10 designed to troubleshoot and repair system issues. WinRE provides access to Advanced Boot Options, which include tools like System Restore, Startup Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt, and more. These tools allow to fix problems such as corrupted system files, boot failures, or malware infections without needing external software.

WinRE is a critical feature for diagnosing and resolving issues when your PC fails to start normally.

WinRE offers a set of advanced troubleshooting tools, such as:

  • Startup Repair: Automatically fix startup problems.
  • System Restore: Roll back to a previous restore point.
  • Command Prompt: Perform advanced troubleshooting using command-line tools.
  • System Image Recovery: Restore your PC using a system image file.
  • Startup Settings: Access Safe Mode and other boot options.
  • Uninstall Updates: Remove problematic Windows updates.

Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE)

There are several ways to enter the Windows Recovery Environment to access Advanced Boot Options.

Access WinRE via the Settings Menu (When Windows Is Working)

If your Windows 11 or 10 system is operational, you can access WinRE through the Settings app.

  • Open Settings: Press Windows + I to open the Settings app.
  • For Windows 11: Go to System > Recovery. For Windows 10: Go to Update & Security > Recovery.
  • Under the “Advanced startup” section, click Restart now. Your PC will reboot and enter the WinRE interface.

Once in WinRE, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options to access tools like Startup Repair, System Restore, or Safe Mode.

Use the Power Menu (Shift + Restart)

This is another quick and simple way to access WinRE directly from the sign-in screen or Start menu. This method works even if you’re on the login screen or cannot access Settings.

  • Hold down the Shift key. Click Restart from the Start menu or Sign-in screen. Your PC will reboot into WinRE.
  • Continue holding Shift until you see the recovery options.
  • Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options to access the recovery tools.

Boot from a Windows Installation Media

Well, if you experience a startup problem, where Windows fails to boot, you can use a Windows installation USB or DVD to access WinRE.

  • Download the Windows 11 or 10 Media Creation Tool from Microsoft’s official website. Follow the prompts to create a bootable USB drive or DVD.
  • Insert the USB or DVD and restart your PC.
  • Enter the BIOS/UEFI (usually by pressing F2, Del, or Esc during startup) and set the USB/DVD as the primary boot device.
  • Once the Windows Setup screen appears, click Repair your computer (bottom-left corner) to enter WinRE.

  • Now click Troubleshoot,

  • This will represent the advanced options screen.

Here you can access various diagnostic tools, including the startup settings option from where you can boot into safe mode, to repair your Windows 10 PC from bad drivers or problems with certain applications.

Force Restart to Trigger Automatic Repair

If your PC cannot boot normally, Windows may automatically launch WinRE after repeated failed startup attempts.

  • Turn on your PC, and when it starts loading Windows, press and hold the power button to shut it down. Repeat this 2-3 times.
  • On the third attempt, Windows should detect the issue and boot into the Automatic Repair screen.
  • From the Automatic Repair screen, click Advanced options to enter WinRE and access tools like Startup Repair or Safe Mode.

Use the Command Prompt to Enter WinRE

If you have access to an admin-level Command Prompt, you can trigger a reboot directly into WinRE.

  1. Press Windows + S, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and select Run as administrator.
  2. Type shutdown /r /o /f /t 00 and press Enter. This command forces an immediate restart into WinRE.

Once in WinRE, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options to access recovery tools.

Tips for Using WinRE Effectively

  • Backup First: Before making significant changes (e.g., System Restore), back up important files if possible.
  • Choose the Right Tool: Use Startup Repair for boot issues, System Restore for reverting to a previous state, or Safe Mode for troubleshooting software conflicts.
  • Update Drivers/Firmware: If WinRE resolves your issue, update drivers or firmware to prevent recurrence.
  • Check Disk Health: Use the Command Prompt in WinRE to run chkdsk /f /r to scan for disk errors.
