Fix Audio services not responding Problem on windows 10

Other users also report suddenly one day out of nowhere an error pops up saying “Audio services not responding” and audio is no longer working on Desktop or laptop.  And some other users the problem is little bit different like Audio device is disabled, No sound Device Installed etc. This error Mostly occurs because The windows Audio service is not Running, may the audio driver is outdated and couldn’t function properly. Or during Windows 10 update the audio driver gets damaged may this is not compatible with current version of windows 10.

Before Perform Troubleshooting steps

Check your speaker and headphone connections for loose cables or the wrong jack.

New PCs these days are equipped with 3 or more jacks including,

  • microphone jack
  • line-in jack
  • line-out jack.

These jacks connect to a sound processor. So make sure your speakers are plugged in to the line-out jack. If unsure which is the right jack, try plugging speakers in to each of the jacks and see it produces any sound.

2. Check your power and volume levels, and try turning all the volume controls up.

3. Some speakers and apps have their own volume controls, and you might have to check them all.

4. Try connecting using a different USB port.

5. Remember that your speakers probably won’t work when headphones are plugged in.

Restart the Windows Audio service and all of its dependencies

As The Error Message shows Audio services not responding / Audio services not running you must check Windows Audio Service and its all dependencies are Running properly. This is highly effective solution to fix this type problem. Fix this problem by restarting the Windows Audio service and two of its three dependencies, and making sure that all three of these services are set to automatically start when your computer boots up. To Check and Restart This Services ..

Restart Services

Press Win + R on Run Type Services.msc and hit enter key.

 

This Will open windows Services Now Scroll down and look for Windows Audio service check service is Running or not. If Service is not started simply right click  and Select Start As shown bellow image. Or If Service Is already Running Then Right click and select Restart To Restart the running service. If start and restart options are grayed out the it may be windows audio service is disabled. For this cause you have to Right click and select properties.

Change Audio Service Startup Type

Change the startup type to Automatic and click on apply. Then click on Start under the Service status option. Do The same for Bellow services also.

  • Windows Audio Endpoint Builder service
    Multimedia Class Scheduler service (if available)
    Plug and Play

Note Make sure all these services are set to automatic startup. And also Make sure the above services are checked in msconfig.exe

Restart Audio Service with Command Prompt

If you are confitable with command prompt then you can do this with simply perform bellow command lines.

First Open Command prompt as administrator and type bellow commands one by one.

First Type net stop audiosrv to stop the windows audio service.

Next Type net stop AudioEndpointBuilder to Stop the Audio EndpointBuilder Service.

Again Type net start audiosrv to restart the Audio Service

And net start AudioEndpointBuildert to Restart the Audio EndpointBuilder Service.

After That Simply Restart The windows And Check Audio services not responding problem got solved. And normally you can get back Audio on your computer. If still getting problem fallow next step.

Change the bit rate in Play Back Devices

Right-click the sound icon in the taskbar, at the bottom right of the screen. Select Playback Devices from the menu.

Choose the current playback device (by-default, it’s set to speakers) and double-click on it to open its properties. Now Go to Advanced tab and change the bit rate to either, 24bit/44100 Hz or 24bit/192000Hz, depending on your speaker configuration.

After this, check if the sound issues are resolved on your Windows 10 computer.

Turn off audio enhancement

Go to Start, enter Sound, and select Sound Control Panel from the list of results. On the Playback tab, right-click (or tap and hold) the Default Device and select Properties.
On the Enhancements tab, select the Disable all enhancements check box and try to play your audio device.

If that doesn’t work, select Cancel and, on the Playback tab, select another default device (if you have one). Select the Disable all enhancements check box, and try to play audio again. Do this for each default device.

Try different audio formats 

Go to Start, enter Sound, and select Sound Control Panel from the list of results. On the Playback tab, right-click (or tap and hold) the Default Device, and then select Properties.
On the Advanced tab, under Default Format, change the setting, and then retest your audio device. If that doesn’t work, try changing the setting again.

Update, Roll Back or Re-Install Audio Drivers

If you face the Audio issue After upgrade to windows 10. you can try to simply roll it back to the last good configuration. To do this simply Right-click the Start button, select Device Manager. Now on device manager look for Sound, video and game controllers and Expand it.

Here Right click on High Definition Audio Device And select Update Driver software.

Now on next Screen Select Search Automatically For updated driver software. This will check available updated driver if found any new version this will install, After that restart windows and check.

Use Roll Back Driver option

Some Times users report after upgrade windows 10 or install new version Audio driver they get problem on audio sound. That cause the Roll back driver option is a very good solution. This option will revert back to old installed driver which working on your windows without any error.

To use roll back driver option open device manager through right click on start menu and select device manager.  Now look for Sound, video and game controllers and Expand it. Here Right click on High Definition Audio Device And select properties. A new popup will open here move to Driver tab you will get Roll Back Driver option As shown bellow image.

Note : Roll Back Driver option only available when you upgrade the audio driver from old to new one.

When you click on it windows you will ask for confirmation click yes. This will revert the installed driver to previous version. Now simply restart windows and check Audio services not responding problem solved.

Install generic audio Driver 

Open Device Manager, right-click (or tap and hold) the audio driver, and select Uninstall. Restart your device and Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver. And if that didn’t work, try using the generic audio driver that comes with Windows.

To do this :

Open Device Manager, right-click (or tap and hold) your audio driver > Update driver software > Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.

Let me pick device driver on my computerSelect High Definition Audio Device, select Next, and follow the instructions to install it.

After Install once Restart windows and check problem fixed That’s it. Your computer speakers should now be able to play sound normally. If the sound is still not working, then try downloading and installing the latest sound card drivers for Windows 10 from the manufacturer’s website.

Registry Tweak to fix Audio Service not responding problem

If above methods not fix windows 10 Audio services not responding problem then you can try bellow registry tweak to fix this issue.

Note Before make changes on windows registry we recommended to create a system restore point. So that if any thing goes wrong while change on registry we can revert back using system restore.




First Press Windows Key + R then type regedit and hit enter to open Registry editor.

Now On Registory editor navigate to the following path :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AudioEndPointBuilder\Parameters

Here on middle pane Locate ServicDll and if the value is %SystemRoot%\System32\Audiosrv.dll, this is the cause of the problem. Replace the above value with this: %SystemRoot%\System32\AudioEndPointBuilder.dll. As shown bellow image.

Now After make changes close registry editor and simply Restart your PC to apply changes. Then after check hope you get rid of this windows 10 Audio services not responding error.

After perform above steps check Audio is get back on your system if not then once again Run the windows inbuilt audio troubleshooting tool by right click on volume icon on task bar and select Troubleshoot sound problems. This will check internal errors for windows audio service and fix them itself.
